How earthquakes are detected
christofforr89.edublogs.org
Earthquakes are detected by seismographs. Seismographs sense seismic activity underground and record the activity on a seismogram. A seismogram is a piece of paper that has a squiggly line made by a pen that represents the activity underground. Seismograms can be used to find the amplitude and distance from the epicenter of the earthquake. For instance, in the picture to the left the seismograph is the machine (the seismogram is moving in the direction of the arrow and the object hanging down resists the motion) , and the seismogram is the piece of paper with the recording on it that the pen creates.
